Dataset description
The data describes the spatial modelling estimates produced by the PUROHELMI project on the change in the natural condition of the habitate and benthic species of small streams. NOTE: The data will be revised and updated in the course of 2021.
The assessment of the change in the natural state of Purohabitat is based on Metsähallitus’s brook inventory method (Hyvönen et al. 2005). In the method, the stream is transported upstream of the stream and dozens of information about its characteristics and natural event is recorded. The change in the natural state is assessed on a class scale of 1 to 5, where 1 stands for the most and the 5 for the least changed.
The basis for the assessment of the change in the natural condition of the benthic species is the field sampling carried out with kick-scotch and the site-specific modelling of the reference species developed in the Freshabit project (Rajakallio et al. 2021, Aroviita et al. 2021). The soil method is the same as for the monitoring of the ecological status of larger current waters (Järvinen et al. 2019). The variability of the species is estimated as the percentage of the natural species lost.
National estimates of natural state change are based on spatial data-based statistical models, which have been developed with the help of terrain data and spatial data sets. Habitat transformation modelling has been carried out using the Extreme gradient boosting method and multivariate modelling of the transformation of benthic species.
Terrain data were used from the inventory of 629 water streams and 650 benthic invertebrates. In particular, SYKE’s riverbank database (Ranta10 data) and peatland drainage map, Corine soil cover data and forest inventory data of the Natural Resources Institute Finland have been used as spatial data. No estimates have been produced for water streams with no peatlands in their catchment areas.
The estimates have been produced for SYKE’s Ranta10 collections, within which the change in the natural condition can vary a lot. When using the material, it should be remembered that they do not give a full picture of the change in the natural condition of an individual stream. There is also inaccuracy in the models and map data. For example, the final need for refurbishment of an individual brook must always be determined on site in the terrain.
The assessments have been produced in SYKE’s PUROHELMI project in the Helmi programme of the Ministry of the Environment. The Helmi programme addresses the main direct cause of natural loss in Finland, i.e. the loss of habitats and quality.
The PUROHELMI project has continued the research carried out in the SmallvesiGIS and Freshabit LIFE IP projects in cooperation with Metsähallitus, the Finnish Forest Centre, the University of Oulu and Luke.
The material is part of SYKE’s open data (CC BY 4.0).
