EU register on the location of industrial activities in Finland

The purpose of the EU register is to establish an up-to-date register of large industrial establishments and animal shelters located in the EU. The registry will serve as a basis for the annual reporting under the EU Industrial Emissions Directive (2010/75/EU) and the Emission Data Reporting Regulation (166/2006). Finland has around 1 200 industrial plants or large animal shelters covered by this reporting. The purpose of the Industrial Emissions Directive is to reduce the environmental and health damage caused by industry by enhancing and harmonising the environmental protection requirements of industry. The Directive also aims to improve public access to information on the location of industrial installations and the authorisation procedures, permit regulations and the various stages of regulatory control. Efforts will be made to reduce the harm caused by industrial activities, including through the use of best usable techniques (BAT). The main findings of industry-specific Best Available Techniques Reference Documents, i.e. conclusions, are legally binding with certain possibilities of deviation. Such possible exemptions in environmental permits, i.e. in practice reductions in emission limit values, are one of the main issues to be reported. The IR data shall be reported on an annual basis. Data on small waste incineration plants and installations using organic solvents shall be reported every three years. The data product INSPIRE has been published. The Registry is used as a database for annual reporting obligations under the Industrial Emission Directive (2010/EU/75) and the European Pollutant Release and Transfer Register Regulation (166/2006). The Registry covers approximately 1,200 industrial activities or animal shelters in Finland. This SYKE’s dataset can be used according to open data license (CC BY 4.0).
