Fell areas

The Tunturi area data includes areas located north and above the mountain birch zone and the bare forest, i.e. a continuous coniferous forest. A uniform and unambiguous definition of the fell area will benefit, for example, national and international assessments related to fells, as well as land use, climate and ecosystem service reviews. The material is a 20 m x 20 m raster, the starting materials of which are collected from several sources. The outcome has been approved by a broad group of experts. The fell area is classified in 3 categories: 0 no fell area 1 area of fell patterns 2 area to be included in fell patterns The mineral soil and rock patterns of the fell area are included in category 1 and the associated larger marsh and water areas are in category 2. Category 2 also includes other small-scale intermediate areas, which allow the suburban area to be delimited. There is a source raster that tells which source data the value of each pixel is based on, as well as a document describing the categories and the compilation of the data. The spatial dataset for the fell area has been combined with the nature directive’s fell habitat type data (e.g. fell huts and canvas), related rocks, rocks and lawlands, and separate inventory data for the southern fells, extracted from the figurative data of Metsähallitus’ nature services. Elevation and forest boundaries (MML and Luke) were also used in the selection of source data patterns based on expert definitions. Private country patterns were produced using aerial photography and similar data used for the selection of countries.
