Dataset description

In the data, Finland’s marine regions are classified into four different regional levels: — MHtaso1: Finnish sea area up to the external border of the EEZ. — MHtaso2: The Finnish sea area up to the external border of the EEZ has been divided into six sea areas by HELCOM. — MHtaso3: At regional level 2, the six marine regions are divided into coastal waters of water management and the high seas. — MHtaso4: The six marine regions at regional level 2 are divided into coastal water types and the open sea. Coastal water types have been identified for water management in 14 areas, where each MFA 2 sea basin has both inner and outer coastal waters. At the most accurate level (MHtaso4), Finland’s coastal water types and offshore waters are as follows. Coastal water types: Inner coastal waters of the Gulf of Finland (Ss) Outer coastal waters of the Gulf of Finland (Su) Southwestern inner archipelago (Ls) Southwestern Central Archipelago (Lv) Southwestern outer archipelago (Lu) Inner coastal waters of the Bothnian Sea (Ses) Outer coastal waters of the Bothnian Sea (Seu) Kvarken inner archipelago (Ms) Outer Kvarken Archipelago (Mu) Inner coastal waters of the Bothnian Bay (Ps) Outer coastal waters of the Bothnian Bay (Pu) Inner archipelago of Åland (AAI) Åland Mid-Archipelago (Aam) Outer archipelago of Åland (AAY) Offshore waters: North Baltic Sea Open Sea of the Gulf of Finland Open Sea of Ahvena Open Sea of Bothnian Sea The open sea of the Kvarken The High Sea of the Bothnian Bay The Marine Directive aims at good environmental status in the marine environment. The Ministry of the Environment, in cooperation with the Ministry of Agriculture and Forestry and the Ministry of Transport and Communications, draws up a national marine management plan covering Finland’s territorial waters and the exclusive economic zone. Several state research institutes and agencies are also central to the work. The Marine Management Plan is a marine strategy required by the EU Marine Strategy Framework Directive and the Government approves the Marine Management Plan. In Finland, the Marine Directive has been implemented by the Act on the Organisation of Water Management and Marine Management (30.12.2004/1299) and refined by the Government Decree on the Organisation of Marine Management (980/2011). In accordance with the Finnish Marine Management Plan, the heartbeat has reported an assessment of the state of the sea, definitions of good marine environmental status and environmental targets for the reporting period 2012-2018. The material is part of SYKE’s open data (CC BY 4.0). The data product INSPIRE has been published. *** In this dataset Finland’s marine areas are classified to 4 levels: —Level1: Finland’s marine area including the exclusive economic zone. —Level2: Finland’s marine area including the exclusive economic zone is divided to six sub-basins by a HELCOM agreement. —Level3: The six sub-basins on level 2 are divided to offshore waters and coastal waters as defined in the implementation of the EU water framework directive. —Level4: The coastal waters as defined on level 3 are further divided to coastal water types as defined in the implementation of the EU water framework directive. The 14 water types include inner and outer (and sometimes to middle) coastal waters. This SYKE’s dataset can be used according to open data license (CC BY 4.0). The data are based on the Land Survey of Finland’s Land Survey database for 2000-2008 (1:5 000-1:10 000). The data are based on data reported under the Marine Strategy Framework Directive (2008/56/EC). *** Data is based on the shoreline data taken from the topographic database of the National Land Survey of Finland (NLS) in the scale of 1:5 000-1:10 000.
