Dataset description

River basin management areas under the EU Water Framework Directive in Finland. In Finland, the Water Framework Directive has been implemented in essence by the Act on the Organisation of Water Management, i.e. the River Basin Management Act (No 1299 of 30 December 2004, entered into force on 31 December 2004) and by the Government Decree on River Basin Management Areas (No 1303 of 30.12.2004, entry into force on 1 January 2005). The river basin management areas in Finland are 1) the Kymijoki-Gulf of Finland river basin management area, 2) the Kokemäenjoki-Archipelago Sea-Selkä Sea river basin management area, 3) the Oulu-Iijoki river basin management area and 4) the Kemijoki river basin management area. In addition, an international river basin management area will be established with Sweden in the Tornionjoki river basin and with Norway in the Teno, Näätämöjoki and Pasvik river basins. The Centres for Economic Development, Transport and the Environment are responsible for the implementation of the River Basin Management Act. The Province of Åland forms its own river basin management area, where the implementation of the Water Framework Directive is based on the Åland Province’s own legislation. WFD has been implemented in Finland through the Act on Water Resources Management (No 1299/2004 given in Helsinki on 30 December 2004) and through the Government Decree on Water Resources Management Regions (No 1303/2004, issued in Helsinki 30 December 2004). Finnish river basin districts are 1) the river basin district of river Vuoksi, 2) the river basin district of the river Kymijoki-Gulf of Finland, 3) the river basin district of the river Kokemäenjoki-Archipelago Sea- Bothnian Sea, 4) the river basin district f the river Oulujoki-the river Iijoki and 5) the river basin district of the river Kemijoki. Beside these, an international river basin districts have been formed with Sweden in the river basin of the river Tornionjoki, and with Norway, in the river basins of the river Teno, the river Näätämönjoki and the river Paatsjoki. Execution of measures for implementing the Act on Water Resources Management is a responsibility of the local Centres for Economic Development, Transport and the Environment.
