Dataset description

The data includes the division of Finland’s landscape provinces. Finland is divided into ten different landscape provinces, some of which are still divided into regions. This distribution reflects the regional features and the variety of landscapes that characterise cultural landscapes. The differences between neighbouring areas are not steep, as landscape features tend to be phased in. On the other hand, regions and provinces which are distant from each other are significantly different in landscapes. The division of landscape provinces has been prepared by the Ministry of the Environment’s Landscape Region Working Group. The division has been used when national and provincial reviews and assessments of the different features of the cultural landscape have been carried out. The breakdown is presented in the report of the Landscape Region Working Group (YM 66/1992). The material is part of SYKE’s open data (CC BY 4.0). Purpose: The division of rural districts has been used to assess the value and representativeness of landscape areas. The division can also be used as a background map and for rough analyses. Use within the accuracy of the material. Finland has been divided to ten different landscape provinces which are further divided to landscape regions. The division represents the typical local characteristics of national rural landscapes and rural landscape diversity through Finland. The difference between adjacent regions is not sharp, and regions evolve through transitional areas. Provinces located further apart have more variation. The landscape province division has been produced by the National Landscape Inventory working group from the Ministry of the Environment. The division has been used when national and regional surveys on different landscapes are prepared. The division has been presented as a decision associated map to the memorandum from the Landscape Inventory working group (YM 66/1992). This SYKE’s dataset can be used according to open data license (CC BY 4.0) Purpose of use: The National Landscape Division has been used in the evaluation the value and representativeness of landscape areas. Division can be used as a base map or for rough spatial analyses. Information can be used in limits of the data accuracy. The dataset doesn't include information from the autonomous Åland islands. The material has been digitised from the screen of the Finnish Environment Institute using different materials as a basis. The names of the counties and regions in the countryside correspond to the nomenclature in the report of the Landscape Region Working Group (YM 66/1992). Åland has been added to the file on 11 September 2018 and a table of names in different languages (Swedish, English, Sámi) is available in the reference documents. Finland’s borders are based on the municipality size 1:100 000, 2013 of the Finnish Land Survey of Finland’s open data, which has been added in SYKE with the sealine and the largest islands in the Baltic Sea from SYKE’s own coastline material. The National Landscape Division has been Digitised in the Finnish Environment Institute from the screen using different background materials. The names of the landscape provinces and regions are equal to the names used on the memorandum from the Landscape area working group. The national borders are from open data of National Land Survey, Administrative boundaries 1:100 000, 2013, with corrected coastline. The border of national waters, Digitised in SYKE, has been matched to these national borders. Location/Location: .GEO.BiolMaantAreal
