Dataset description

17,000 years ago, an elementary event changed the landscape around Mallnitz. Large parts of the Auernig fell to the valley. The dimensions and effects of the mountain collapse were mapped and examined by the Geological Federal Institute of Vienna. Age dating proved difficult. More than 170 million m³ of rocks crashed into the valley at a speed of 50-80 m/s starting from the area between Auernig and Törlkopf and were partially transported 6 km far to the end of the Groppenstein Gorge.
