Dataset description

The aim of this thesis was to contribute to the knowledge, mapping and documentation of the fungi species of Styria as well as the assessment of the biodiversity of fungi in the Gesäuse National Park, especially with regard to future objectives for the mycological research of this protected area. The six sites (reception areas) were selected according to the most promising habitat conditions. In addition to these new samples, herbaric evidence from the collection of the Institute of Plant Sciences of the University of Graz (GZU) was evaluated. In the investigation area 169 fungal species were finally detected. Some of these findings are briefly commented on. Camarops tubulina is most likely a new finding for the fungal flora of Styria. According to the records of the working group Heimische Pilze (carding data at the Department of Botany at the Joanneum State Museum), some of the species listed here were already lost in Styria (e.g. Mycoacia uda, Athelia decipiens, Bisporella sulfurina). On driftwood in the creek bed some very remarkable finds of small-fruited ascomycetes, including three families described by H. Wegelin in 1894 and hardly mentioned later: Amphisphaeria helvetica (here as Otthia h.), Phomatospora helvetica (here as Ph. moravica) and Strickeria longispora. Only one species (Trametes pubescens) is considered endangered by the Austrian Red List (category 3). The problem of realistic classification of the risk level of wood-inhabiting fungi according to IUCN categories is briefly discussed.
