A strategic framework for prioritisation to restore ecosystems at national and sub-national levels.

The EU Biodiversity Strategy for 2020 calls for the restoration of 15 % of degraded ecosystems. A strategic framework for prioritising restoration projects has been developed as a preparatory action to achieve the objective. This also includes the identification of specific landscape areas for the implementation of measures. Maps of Austria’s biotope and cultural landscape types, national inventories of certain ecosystems and the Austrian forest inventory serve as an essential basis for the assessment of the state of IST, the restoration potential and the prioritisation. The costs needed to achieve the 15 % target have been identified for forest, water and open-land ecosystems, totalling EUR 10.7 billion.
