In 2007, 298,182 passenger cars were newly registered in Austria, 59 % of which were diesel and 41 % petrol vehicles. The average CO2 emissions are 164°g/km (diesel) and 161°g/km (petrol). Compared to the previous year, the average emissions of all vehicles decreased slightly, but were higher than in 2004 and 2005. In general, the trend towards more powerful vehicles is continuing. In 2007, newly registered diesel cars had an average engine output of 17°kW higher than petrol engines. CO2 monitoring is carried out annually and reported to the European Commission. This will review the commitment of European, Korean and Japanese car manufacturers’ associations to reduce specific CO2 emissions to 140 g/km by technical means by 2008/2009
