Practice of large composting plants and essential requirements for low-emission operation

The report forms the basis for Austria’s national contribution in the field of aerobic biological waste treatment (composting) for the revision of the European BAT document on waste treatment. To this end, current emissions data for composting plants were collected in cooperation with the City of Vienna. With the involvement of stakeholders and plant operators, essential requirements for low-emission operation of large composting plants are formulated. These requirements were compiled in the light of the Directive on the state of the art of composting and on the basis of best practice examples of Austrian composting plants. Some of the requirements of the Directive on the state of the art of composting have been specified, and in some cases additional requirements have been introduced.
