Dataset description

Every year, around four million tonnes of waste are incinerated or co-incinerated in Austrian incineration plants. They are subject to the Waste Incineration Ordinance and thus also to emission limit values for air pollutants. The 2009-2018 emissions analysis shows that nitrogen oxides, dust, dioxins and furans have decreased from combustion, while heavy metal emissions have increased. During the investigation period, around 70 % of waste was used in waste incineration plants. The rest was burned in co-incineration plants and cement plants. In the context of the analysis of the development of waste streams, pollutant loads and emission concentrations, the technical development of incineration plants, legal requirements and incinerated amounts of waste and waste types were taken into account.
