Dataset description

Coleopterological Round Table 91: 239278. The xylobionte beetle fauna of the forests of the Gesäuse National Park (Steiermark, Austria) was systematically surveyed in 2016. The aim of the study was to document the diversity of species as well as the nature conservation assessment of these habitats in order to be able to identify areas of particular importance for the Xylobionte fauna. For this purpose, 30 representative sites were selected based on forest biotope mapping. In total, 230 species of beetles from 52 families were detected, of which 156 species are xylobiont. The ecological guilds are distributed among 66 old wood and 55 fresh wood colonists, 30 species living on tree mushrooms, two mulm cave colonists and three species with special biology. Faunistically remarkable are the evidence of Symbiotes armatus (first detection from Styria) as well as Cacotemnus thomsoni, Lacon lepidopterus, Microrhagus lepidus, Ostoma ferruginea, Peltis grossa, Wanachia triguttata and Zilora obscura. So far, eight species of jungle relics are known from the area.
