Dataset description

Survey Adult Education (AES) Purpose and brief description Education and training of adults is now considered an important asset to promote economic growth and social (personal) development. In policy circles, this has led to the need to collect statistical data on the courses taken in order to monitor the development of the population (the built-up human capital) and to measure the acquired knowledge, skills and competences. Indeed, the size of the training activities followed is seen as an important investment in order to achieve the objectives set by the policy. The number of training activities followed should therefore be able to be measured and valued, allowing for policy adjustment and efficient coordination. In particular, the Adult Education Survey aims to measure the participation of the Belgian population in lifelong learning. The aim is to identify the levels of participation in various forms of training: which respondents follow what type of training. The survey distinguishes between formal and non-formal education on the one hand and informal learning on the other. The Adult Education Survey was conducted for the first time in 2008 by Statbel. A second edition took place in 2011. It covers all types of adult training and training activities. This survey is carried out on behalf of Eurostat. The aim is to collect information comparable in all participating countries: participation rates in education and training broken down by age, gender and type of training, characteristics of the courses followed, etc. Population Individuals aged between 25 and 64; optional group of 18-24 years of data collection method and possible sampling Survey technique based on the use of questionnaires on paper Frequency Five-yearly. Timing publication Results available 9-12 months after the reference period Forms Questionnaire 2016 (PDF, 729 Kb) Definitions Economic Activity (NACE-BEL): Official nomenclature with an ‘X’ at the end of the number as the information is only 4 positions.
