Average nocturnal light emissions for the months of April to October, excluding the month of June — condition 2018

The map shows the nocturnal emissions of light in Flanders observed from space. The Suomi National Polar-orbiting Partnership satellite flies over Flanders after midnight and has a very sensitive sensor (Visible/Infrared Imaging Sensor or VIIRS). Data has only been used without the influence of moonlight, clouds and snow. Employees of the U.S. NOAA Earth Observation Group, the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration, process the data into nighttime light emission maps. The units of the card are Watt/cm²/steradial. This is the power per area per space angle. For the Flemish Region, the map shows the average value of light misses for the reference year 2018. This map is compiled based on the average of the 6 monthly values of the months April, May, July, August, September and October. The month of June is excluded: this month had too few observations in 2016 and is thus excluded from each year to maintain comparability. The winter months are not included to rule out the influence of winter conditions on light emissions.
