Birds Directive Areas

This stock contains the demarcations of the Birds Directive Areas (SPZ-V) as approved by the Flemish Government on 17 October 1988, 20 September 1996, 23 June 1998, 17 July 2000 and 22 July 2005. The purpose of the Birds Directive or the European Directive 2009/147/EC is to promote the conservation of all species of birds naturally occurring in the wild on the European territory of the Member States. The most important measure is the designation of Special Protection Areas. Measures should be taken in these areas to protect the species of birds and their habitats. The designation or demarcation of the areas was done on the site on analogue maps. Digitisation took place on the screen using medium-scale map material on a scale of 1/25,000 or at 1/50,000.
