Dataset description

Purpose and brief description This concerns the carriage of goods by road (on Belgian and foreign territory) by vehicles registered in Belgium with a payload of at least 1 tonne. For road haulage, the data were based on a weekly survey from owners and tenants of tractors and trucks registered in Belgium with at least 1 tonne payload. These owners/tenants drive either on their own account or on behalf of third parties (transport companies). The purpose of this survey is to collect data on the carriage of goods by road carried out by vehicles registered and motorised in Belgium (basic variables are: number of tonnes transported, tonne-kilometres performed and kilometres travelled). The data is collected through a random examination in accordance with the provisions of the European Regulation (PDF, 82.3 Kb) 70/2012 of 18/01/2012. Each Member State shall send the collected data quarterly to Eurostat in order to allow an overall picture of road haulage within the European Community. Population Trucks and tractors registered in Belgium with the Introduction Service (D.I.V — FPS Mobility) data collection method and possible sample size Base is the population of lorries and tractors registered in Belgium with the Traffic Establishment Service (D.I.V — FPS Mobility). In accordance with the provisions of the European Regulation 70/2012, agricultural vehicles, military vehicles and vehicles belonging to central or local government institutions are excluded. In addition, each Member State is free to exclude motorised road transport vehicles whose payload or authorised weight remains below a certain limit. For Belgium, the limit of 1 tonne payload applies. The sample fractions are determined according to the type of vehicle (truck or tractor), and for the lorries according to the type of the body (open truck, refrigerated truck, flat-mounted truck, truck with tipping box...) and the load capacity. Tractors are asked exhaustively once a year, trucks on average once every 2 years. This is a weekly sample, with approximately 1,000 lorries and/or tractors randomly selected from the population, with the same lorry/trailer being asked only once a year. Frequency yearly. Timing publication Opportunity of results: 12 months after the referral period. Forms Electronic declaration — excel file (XLS, 324 KB) Declaration on paper (PDF, 547.8 KB) Comments From the year 2000, the General Directorate of Statistics has additional information on the vehicles intended for transport for third parties. The methodology was adapted to ensure that the extrapolation takes place a posteriori for the transport of third parties and the transport on own account. The average of the commercial vehicle fleet and the usable response shall be split by transport for third parties the transport on own account. This means that a comparison in the period from 2000 no longer applies to the evolution of the ratio of transport for third parties and transport for own account From the year 2015, a new stratification method is used so that a priori a distinction is made between transport on own account and transport on behalf of third parties. This has the advantage that the sample can be much more targeted and can therefore be significantly reduced at the same time. As a second stratification variable, the capacity class (useful payload) is used. Metadata Carriage of goods by road.pdf
