Dataset description

The ‘Warmtekaart Vlaanderen 2019’ was commissioned by the Flemish Energy and Climate Agency to implement the EU Directive 2012/27/EU on energy efficiency and the Renewable Energy Directive (EU) 2018/2001. The main products are maps for 2019 for the territory of Flanders showing the heat demand of large consumers and small consumers, results at the level of municipalities and statistical sectors, maps of existing and planned heat networks and finally locations of potential heat supply points. The study was conducted by VITO in cooperation with the distribution system operator Fluvius. You can consult the accompanying report here: https://www.energiesparen.be/warmtekaart Based on the locations of the large consumers with their category of heat demand (see map layer ‘High consumer heat demand 2019’) a map was derived showing, at statistical sector level, the number of energy-intensive businesses weighted in a 5 km radius around each sector. Energy-intensive businesses mean large consumers with heat demand greater than 1 GWh/year, the large consumers with the lowest heat demand (0.2-1 GWh/year) were not included in the analysis. On the basis of the available data, this map gives an initial indication of the possibility of demand for and/or supply of residual heat in the region, but the comment must of course be made here that local conditions may be different from what can be derived purely on the basis of the heat demand. In these figures, we have no insight into locations where the business processes may have been optimised so that despite the high heat demand, there could be no residual heat potential.
