Dataset description

This card indicates for each 10 m-cell within the Flemish Region whether or not it belongs to the open space, for reference year 2013. The concept of ‘open space’ is defined here as, on the one hand, the areas that are located outside the cores and which are not occupied by space, and, on the other hand, the unbuilt parts of parks, golf courses and other recreation (as forms of land use that do belong to the space take). In order to give concrete expression to this definition, the Land Use File Flanders, the Space Sequence and the Kernen were used as basic files. First, the entire territory of Flanders was reduced by the nuclei and by space seizure outside the cores. Finally, the unbuilt parts of the parks and recreational areas located outside the cores were added back to the open space. In this way, this map includes the large uncultivated agricultural, nature, forest, park and recreation areas of Flanders located outside the cores. These are intersected with infrastructures and fragmented by all kinds of buildings (private dwellings, agricultural houses, sheds, farm buildings, etc.) and the associated plots and gardens that do not belong to the open space. This geodata layer was replaced in 2021 by a reworked version for condition 2013, in order to remain in line with the adjusted methodology used in the layout of state 2019. For more details on the method of allocating land use to open space, please refer to the technical report ‘Land Use and Space Seizure in Flanders, condition 2019’, which can be found at https://archief-algemeen.omgeving.vlaanderen.be/xmlui/handle/acd/449392
