Dataset description

The concept of ‘space seizure’ is defined in the White Paper on Space Policy Plan as that part of space in which the biophysical function is no longer the most important. In other words, it is about the space occupied by our settlements (i.e. for housing, industrial and commercial purposes, transport infrastructure, recreational purposes and also parks and gardens). This definition is based on the definition used by the European Commission for ‘settlement area’ or ‘artificial land’, i.e. ‘the area of land used for housing, industrial and commercial purposes, health care, education, nursing infrastructure, roads and rail networks, recreation (parks and sports grounds), etc. In land use planning, it usually corresponds to all land uses beyond agriculture, semi-natural areas, forestry, and water bodies’ (EC, 2012). Starting from the base space fitting file for the state 2013 at 10x10 m resolution (see http://www.geopunt.be/catalogus/datasetfolder/c/c895a125-fa0c-4f3b-8ad1-8a5de62089fe ), the space fitting can also be calculated at a 100x100 m resolution. Instead of a binary indication, the space take is then expressed as a fraction indicating the proportion of each 100x100 m grid cell (= 1 ha) taken by space take at a 10x10 m resolution. For more details on this indicator, see the report ‘Spatial performance indicators’, which can be found under: https://www.ruimtelijkeordening.be/NL/Diensten/Onderzoek/Studies/articleType/ArticleView/articleId/9077
