Dataset description

Purpose and brief description The statistic covers all bets that have occurred in a given year and which relate to a Belgian resident. These events are divided according to the residence of the widower (widower/widow), the month of the event, the age, the nationality of the spouses, the condition of the household, the parental situation, the duration of the marriage,... The statistics also show the average age of widowing according to different criteria: gender, rank of marriage, nationality. Surveyed population All bets Frequency Annual Publication Calendar Results available 9 months after the reference period. Definitions The gross rate of bets is the ratio between the number of bets during the year and the average total population of the same year. The cyclical index of the bets or the sum of the specific bets shows the number of bets in a fictitious cohort of 1000 marriages whose rates for each marriage duration would be equal to those observed in the year considered. Municipality of verweduwing: Municipality where the widowing person lives at the time of the event. Month of Marriage: The month of widowing results from the date of the marriage (i.e. the death of the spouse). Age of the widowing person: Age of the widowing person at the betrayal, calculated in elapsed years as the difference between the date of the widowing and the date of birth. Age of the deceased spouse: Age of the spouse at his death, calculated in years elapsed as the difference between the date of death (= date of the marriage for the surviving spouse) and the date of birth. Nationalities group: Grouping of the countries of nationality of the widowing person or his deceased spouse, depending on whether that country is Belgium, a Member State of the European Union or another country. Place of marriage: place where the marriage of the widowing person and of the deceased spouse was registered according to the I.T. 120 of the Rijksregister. Condition of the household: Type of household in which the widowing person is present at the time of the widowing, mainly based on the analysis of I.T. 140 and 141 on the composition of the household and its members. Parental situation: situation of the widowing person depending on whether or not at least one of his/her children lives at the same address, based on the analysis of I.T. 110 on the lineage. Geographical situation of the widowing person’s children: distance of any children of the widowing person, based on the joint analysis of I.T. 110 (descending), 001 (residence) and 020 (address of the main residence). A child identified at the same address as his parent who is widower is considered to be staying at his/her domicile. Only living children who are registered in the National Register will be taken into account. The category ‘Children abroad’ includes the widowing persons who do not have any child registered in Belgium on the date of the widowing and who has at least one child who is registered abroad or has been removed from the national register on the same date. The widowing persons who have children abroad without having lived for a day in Belgium and are therefore not registered in the National Register cannot be taken into account. Average duration of marriage: average of the duration of the marriage (= difference between the date of the marriage and the date of marriage) in cases of marriage, observed for a given year. Persons whose date of marriage is not known shall not be taken into account. Average age of widowing/death: average of the ages of the persons considered (width persons or their deceased spouses). The persons whose age is unknown at the time of the widowing/death are not taken into account.
