Bioportal — Web portal of Information System

The Nature Protection Information System is a set of databases, application solutions and web services intended for storing, maintaining and sharing data related to different components of biological and landscape diversity and the protection of nature in the Republic of Croatia. Bioportal is a web portal of the information system of nature protection which also contains a GIS browser and ensures public access to information and transparent data sharing, encourages scientific and professional research and contributes to the education of the general public about the natural richness of Croatia and the importance of preserving biodiversity. Technology used: Java/PostgreSQL/Drupal Legal basis: In accordance with the obligation laid down in Article 196 of the Nature Protection Act (NN No 80/13), the Croatian Environmental and Nature Agency (HAOP), the legal successor of the State Institute for Nature Protection (DZZP), “establishes and manages the Nature Protection Information System of the Republic of Croatia, respecting internationally accepted standards and obligations”. Over the years, the Agency has taken over and regularly maintains certain databases owned by the Ministry of Environmental Protection and Energy (GIS databases: Protected areas of the Republic of Croatia and the Habitats Map of Croatia) and coordinated the development of several thematic bases related to nature protection, some of which are also available online. Targeted beneficiaries: Scientific-professional and general public to whom access, review and analysis of up-to-date and verified data on biodiversity and nature protection in the Republic of Croatia should be made available, respecting the principles and guidelines of the EU INSPIRE Directive and national legislation (Law on National Spatial Data Infrastructure, Act on the Right of Access to Information).
