Areas listed with forest obligation in the land register or the land register, cf. Order of Act on Forests No. 1044 of 20 October 2008.
By far the largest part of the Danish forests are subject to peace. The peace forest obligation was introduced more than 200 years ago to ensure Denmark’s supply of wood after almost all forest in Denmark had been cleared.
When an area is subject to conservation obligations, it means that the owner of the land is obliged at all times to use it for forestry purposes. Forestry is a very long-term form of cultivation. The peace forest obligation follows a number of rules that together ensure long-term forest cultivation, so that forests also benefit subsequent generations.
The protected areas are called peace forests. A peace forest shall consist of trees that either form or are growing up to a connected forest of high trunk trees. However, this does not mean that there can be no ungrown land in a peace forest.
As a starting point, protected areas according to the Forest Act are:
1. Areas that the Minister for the Environment has decided must be protected.
2. Areas listed in the land register or land register as majoratsskov.
3. Land with forest owned or acquired by state, municipalities or folk church, land owned by these, and where forest is established or found, as well as associated land without tree standing.
