Dataset description

This metadata refers to the dataset presenting the areas converted to forest cover classes from other land cover based on Corine Land Cover (hectares per kilometer square) in EU27 member countries and the United Kingdom. It includes reforestation after forest operations, natural expansion and succession and afforestation. The internal changes between different forest classes (i.e. 3.1.X CLC classes) and transitional forest (i.e. 3.2.4 CLC class) were not considered as forest change. This dataset is the component "Forest gain 2006 - 2012" of Forest cover change indicator that evaluates the trend of forest cover change (gain/loss) from 2000 to 2018 based on the spatial explicit information provided by Corine Land Cover. The Forest cover change indicator was used in EU Ecosystem Assessment (Maes et al., 2020) carried out by Joint Research Centre, European Environment Agency, DG Environment, and the European Topic Centres on Biological Diversity and on Urban, Land and Soil Systems. Concretely, this dataset is one of the components of the indicator "Forest cover change" used, with other indicators, for assessing trends of pressures by the habitat conversion and land degradation on forest ecosystems.
