Dataset description
The National Base Animal Information System contains benthic animal material produced by water authorities and water research institutes under public control in the monitoring and monitoring of benthic animals from indoor and coastal waters. In addition, the results of benthic animal studies carried out by other parties can also be recorded in the system.
The system includes not only benthic material but also functions supporting sampling planning and sampling and processing of samples, such as pre-filled terrain and analytical forms.
The system has a hierarchical taxonomic database of Finnish macroscopic benthic species encountered during water monitoring.
In addition to environmental management, it is also possible to apply for access and storage rights to the system by organisations outside the environmental administration, such as consultants and research institutes.
The system is accessible through the Hertta and Open Information services. The data is part of SYKE’s open datasets (CC BY 4.0).
Search terms: benthic animal, benthic animals, benthic monitoring
Benthic material produced after the date of publication of the product. According to resources, the most important older materials are also stored.
Purpose of use:
For use by experts in environmental management and research institutes.

Zoobenthos information system
The national zoobenthos information system contains benthic macrofauna data from environmental and statutory monitoring of inland and coastal waters, as well as as well as open sea areas, produced by water and environmental authorities and publicly supervised water research institutes in Finland. In addition, results of benthic macrofauna surveys carried out by other parties can be stored in the system.
The system includes not only results of benthic macrofauna monitoring, but also support for sampling and sample handling, such as pre-filled field and analysis forms.
The database has a hierarchical taxonomic structure of macroscopic zoobenthos species found in Finland.
It is possible for organisations outside environmental administrations, such as Consults and research institutes, to apply for rights to use and store data into the system.
The data is part of SYKE’s open access datasets (CC BY 4.0). The system can be accessed through the Hertta and Open Data Services.
Keywords: Benthic macrofauna, zoobenthos, zoobenthos monitoring
All new and essential older zoobenthos data is stored in the system.
Purpose of use: The material is intended primarily for use by the environmental administration and research institutes.
