Dataset description
Buildings in the Helsinki region by purpose and year of construction as of 31 December 2002. The material contains information on buildings (number, floor area) by purpose/floor number and year of construction
##Regional Limits
The Helsinki region consists of four municipalities in the Helsinki metropolitan area Helsinki, Espoo, Vantaa and Kauniainen and ten framework municipalities: Hyvinkää, Järvenpää, Kerava, Kirkkonummi, Mäntsälä, Nurmijärvi, Pornainen, Sipoo Tuusula and Vihti.
The total levels in the table are the Helsinki metropolitan area, the framework area, the Helsinki region, Uusimaa and Finland. The regional division corresponds to the situation on 1 January of the year following the statistical year. At the beginning of 2009, the south-western part of the municipality of Sipoo (now Östersundom area) and the so-called Västerkulla wedge area from the city of Vantaa were incorporated into Helsinki. This should be taken into account when comparing the figures for the statistical years 2002-2007 with the 2008 figures for Helsinki, Vantaa and Sipoo, as well as the sum levels in the Helsinki Metropolitan Area and the framework area. The Helsinki region is a housing and labour market area.
##Target and cropping
A building is a separate structure, built or erected on its site, with its own entrance, which includes a covered space intended for different functions and generally confined by external walls or walls (buildings).
The floor area of a building includes the areas of the floors and the area of the attic or basement where there are residential or study rooms or other premises corresponding to the main purpose of the building. The area of layer is the horizontal area bounded by the outer surfaces of the walls of the layers or by their thoughtful extension for openings and decorative parts on the surface of the outer walls.
The volume of the building is calculated in accordance with the Finnish Standardisation Association standard SFS 2460, RT 120.12.
##Categories
The purpose of the building is determined by the use of most of the building’s floor area. The main groups used in the building statistics are residential buildings, commercial buildings, office buildings, transport buildings, nursing buildings, assembly buildings, educational buildings, industrial buildings, warehouse buildings, fire and rescue buildings, other buildings. The classification of buildings is presented in Statistics Finland’s Manual of Building Classification 1994.
Not all categories of the classification of buildings are included in Statistics Finland’s building stock. Since the 2000 statistics, the statistical bases for buildings have been amended so that permanent residents have been classified as detached detached houses in the category of residential buildings.
The statistics on building stock do not, as a rule, include summer cottages and, for example, agricultural buildings. Residential buildings are divided into sub-groups of detached houses, row houses and chain houses, flats under 4 floors and flats 4+ floors.
Year of construction refers to the year in which the building was ready for use. If the year of construction is earlier than 1980, it has been possible to indicate the year of renovation for the year of construction.
