A survey of the composition of mixed waste from households in the Helsinki metropolitan area is carried out every three years.
The results are presented as averages and per property group, both in percentages and in kg/as/a. The composition of mixed waste is broken down into 11 categories and subcategories. The categories are:
— biowaste
— paper
— cardboard and paperboard
— the tree
— plastics
— glass
— metal
— textiles and footwear
— electrical equipment and accumulators
hazardous chemicals
— miscellaneous waste

In 2021, the composition of mixed household waste was studied in September during a one-week monitoring period. Households were divided into research groups according to the number of apartments on the property. The research groups consisted of 1 apartment, 2-4 apartments, 5-9 apartments, 10-19 apartments and more than 19 apartments.

In 2018, the composition of mixed household waste was studied in October with a one-week monitoring period and in 2015 in a two-week monitoring period in August-September. The research groups consisted of 1 apartment, 2-4 apartments, 5-9 apartments, 10-19 apartments and more than 19 apartments.
