Ehrenström wanted to create the Grand Duchy of Helsinki with its wide streets and wide squares. Esplanade Park separated the Estonian peninsula from the suburbs of Uusimaa. The German **C. L. Engel** designed the buildings in the monumental centre around the Senate Square. In essence, Ehrenström’s town plan was realised.
