Dataset description

The system contains information on the spatial and temporal distribution of water resources in Finland. Observations are made of elements of the hydrological cycle (rain, evaporation, flow and drainage), the amount of water (water level of water bodies) and other hydrological phenomena (water value of snow, ice thickness, water temperature, etc.). The information system comprises a hydrological database and data and programmes supporting the operation of water bodies. The database part comprises about 10 hydrological sub-registries with observed or calculated values for a total of about 5000 measurement points or ranges. The oldest observations date back to 1693 and more observations are obtained from many observation species on a daily basis. The information system is used to describe and evaluate Finland’s water resources and current water situation. In addition, the system is used in a diverse way to support the use and management of water resources (e.g. water forecasting and decision-making support for water use), flood risk management, water protection and water research tasks. The internal use of environmental management is very extensive and diverse, but the information system is also widely used outside its own administration. The system is accessible through the Hertta environmental information system and the open hydrology interface on the SYKE’s open data pages. The material is part of SYKE’s open data (CC BY 4.0). The oldest observations date back to 1693. Processing history: Product-related service provision: basic data from the hydrological database, statistical analysis of data, calculation software for water use (regulatory calculation and impact assessment). Source of product information: hydrological observation activities of the Environmental Administration, observation by holders of water rights licenses, findings in the form of purchase service contracts (mainly the Finnish Meteorological Institute).
