Dataset description

The Finnish Meteorological Institute’s URCLIM project modelled the effects of construction on the urban climate in current conditions and in the near future. The results show thermal comfort, summer season temperature and winter weather in the contemporary climate (1980-2009) and future climates 2020-2049 and 2040-2069 using the climate data from the test years (Jylhä et al., 2011) describing typical conditions. The results have been modelled for the future climate 2020-2049 using both the growth development of the “suburban densification 1” (moderate urban development) and suburban densification 2 (fast urban development) of the URCLIM project. For the 2040-2069 climate, only suburban densification 2 (fast urban development) has been used in modelling. The model uses the RCP8.5 scenario (a significant increase in GHG emissions globally). The material is not updated. ### Day average temperature in June-August: * Temperature calculated by model at 2 m altitude * Temperatures are presented in Kelvin degrees ### Thermal comfort: * Perceived thermal comfort (moderate or severe hot stress) in hours * Calculated with SURFEX model using thermal comfort index, UTCI * UTCI = Universal Thermal Climate Index, UTCI describes a person’s experience of thermal comfort, and in addition to temperature, air humidity, wind speed and solar radiation are used to calculate it. * UTCI is based on a complex human thermal equilibrium model and needs its own model to calculate it * Simplified UTCI model is used in these invoices ### Winter weather: * RoadSurf model forecast of the number of difficult winter weather in hours (current climate, 2020-2049 and 2040-2059) More information about ###: * The URCLIM project: [http://urclim.prod.lamp.cnrs.fr/](http://urclim.prod.lamp.cnrs.fr/) * Climate in different periods: Jylhä, K., Kalamees, T., Knowledge, H., Ruosteenoja, K., Jokisalo, J., Hyvönen, R., Ilomets, S., Saku, S., Hutila, A., 2011. Test reference year 2012 for building energy demand and impacts of climate change. Finnish Meteorological Institute, Reports 6. If the user plans to use the data for a professional or official urban planning task, we recommend that you familiarise yourself with meta and background information. If necessary, you can contact an expert at the Finnish Meteorological Institute (carl.fortelius(a)fmi.fi). **NOTE!** For map service use, the original raster data (NetCDF) has been vectored to shapefile format by HSY and converted to ETRS-GK25 coordinate system. The coordinate system of the original raster data is WGS84. Both file formats are available for download through this page. **[More detailed descriptions of the datasets](https://avoidatastr.blob.core.windows.net/avoindata/AvoinData/3_Ilmanlaatu_ja_ilmasto/Ilmasto/URCLIM_kaupunkisaamalli/URCLIM_fi.docx).** **See the material in [HSY’s open map service](https://kartta.hsy.fi/?zoomLevel=3&coord=25496760.262213867_6680959.799239885&mapLayers=654+100+default,731+100+urclim_keskilampotilat&uuid=508752a1-2d1e-4011-a0f7-a96e857fff64&noSavedState=true&showIntro=false).**
