Names of Finns in the Population Information System

Separate lists of first names and surnames have been extracted from the Population Information System and the number of names appearing in the Population Information System. For reasons of data protection, first names of less than five copies and surnames of less than 20 are not included in the lists. The first name data are divided into men and women according to how the names appear in the Population Information System for persons of different sexes. Separate lists of men’s and women’s names have been formed, showing separately the total number of names in all forenames, first forenames or other than first names. Surnames are listed in order of magnitude by number of occurrences. The name data have been formed on the basis of valid Finnish names, so they take into account the names of Finnish citizens living in Finland or living abroad who are registered in the Population Information System. The names of foreign nationals, deceased persons or former names of persons have not been taken into account. Space names are counted as first names in the material, as well as patronyms and matronyms containing a separate name such as Matinpoika or Maijandaughter. On the other hand, patronyms which merely refer to another isolated name without being themselves, such as ibn, bin, ben, are not listed in the material. Depending on the spelling of the name, e.g. the vowel weight of the name may be in a different section. These weightings are visible in the material, in which case Viren and Virén appear in the material as their own names. Compound names created by marriage, e.g. Korhonen-Virtanen, also appear in this compound form if there are more than 20 copies. The names were collected on 9 August 2021. Namesets are in Microsoft Excel file format. The number of first names by sorting is shown in different tabs.
