Dataset description

Population of the Helsinki region by age, gender, mother tongue and marital status as of 31 December 2001. ##Regional Limits The Helsinki region consists of four municipalities in the Helsinki Metropolitan Area, Helsinki, Espoo, Vantaa and Kauniainen, and ten framework municipalities Hyvinkää, Järvenpää, Kerava, Kirkkonummi, Mäntsälä, Nurmijärvi, Pornainen, Sipoo, Tuusula and Vihti. The total levels in the table are the Helsinki metropolitan area, the framework area, the Helsinki region, Uusimaa and Finland. The regional division corresponds to the situation on 1 January of the statistical year. At the beginning of 2009, the south-western part of the municipality of Sipoo (now Östersundom area) and the so-called Västerkulla wedge area from the city of Vantaa were incorporated into Helsinki. This should be taken into account when comparing the population figures for the statistical years 2002-2008 with the 2009 figures for Helsinki, Vantaa and Sipoo, as well as the sum levels of the Helsinki metropolitan area and the framework area. The Helsinki region is a housing and labour market area. ##Target and cropping Population is defined as a permanent resident population in a municipality. Persons who, according to the Population Information System maintained by the Population Register Centre (VRK), are resident in the municipality at the turn of the year belong to the population regardless of their nationality, as are Finnish citizens temporarily residing abroad. A foreigner is domiciled in a municipality if his or her stay is intended to last or has lasted for at least one year. The asylum seeker will not have his or her domicile until his/her application has been accepted. Persons belonging to a foreign embassy, a commercial mission or a seconded consular office living in a municipality, as well as their family members and personal service, do not belong to the municipality’s population unless they are Finnish nationals. On the other hand, Finnish staff from Finnish embassies and commercial missions abroad, as well as those serving in the UN peacekeeping forces, are included in the population of the municipality. At the turn of 1993/94, in accordance with the Population Data Act (507/93), the population at the turn of the year replaced the previously used 1 January situation. The difference is that the population at the turn of the year has not been born and moved on the first day of the year. Prior to 1990, information on the life-written population was used. For the sake of simplicity, the tables use the first day of the year. From 1996 onwards, when compiling the population data on the first day of the year, all data on changes received in the Population Information System of the Population Register Centre for the previous year are taken into account by the end of January (1990 until the end of May and in 199195 by the end of March). ##Categories Age means a person’s age in whole years. The data was obtained from the Population Information System. There are five age classification options in the table. Marital status refers to the status under the Marriage Act (234/29). The rating is as follows: Unmarried — Married or registered partnership — Divorced or divorced from registered partnership — Widow or widow after registered partnership For data protection reasons, registered partnerships are classified together with married couples, as well as divorced or widowed divorced or widowed from a registered partnership. Registered partnerships are included since the entry into force on 1 March 1.3.2002 of the new Act on Civil Partnerships (Law on registered partnerships on 9 November 9.11.2001/950). It should be noted that cohabitation is not a marital status. There are representatives of every marital status, including those who are still officially married. The current divorce rules are no longer familiar with the concept of legal separation. Under the old divorce rules, persons sentenced to legal separation before 1 January 1.1.1988 and still living in legal separation have been included in the statistics on married persons. Information on marital status is obtained from the Population Information System. The mother tongue information has been obtained from the Population Information System. When parents enter the name of the child born in the register, they indicate the child’s language. The language remains the same in the Population Information System unless it is changed separately. The languages have been coded in accordance with the ISO 639-1 standard at the Population Register Centre. In this table, the mother tongue is in three categories: Finnish, Swedish and Other languages.
