The regional plan for the region of Western Lapland is a legal plan in accordance with the Land Use and Building Act, which was drawn up by the Regional Council of Lapland and the Ministry of the Environment on 19 February 2014. In connection with the establishment of the regional plan for Western Lapland, the Ministry of the Environment has examined three complaints, which were mostly rejected. The regional plan does not confirm Varevuoma’s peat production area due to insufficient nature surveys, the areas of wind turbines located in the Bothnian Bay area due to insufficient surveys of migratory fish and five areas of wind turbines on the land. The areas of wind turbines that have not been confirmed on the land are located in Simo, near the nationally valuable landscape area of Simojoki and Ylitornio and Pello, the nationally valuable landscape area of Aavasaxa.
