Satellite Mosaic (Image2000)

Finland’s IMAGE2000 satellite image mosaic was produced as part of the EU project IMAGE2000, which produced a digital satellite image map covering the whole of Western and Central Europe. LANDSAT 7 ETM+ satellite images (approximately 1000), received between 1999 and 2001. The individual satellite images have been ortho-corrected to national map projections, and then mosaiced into a single satellite image map for Europe. In the data, the water and the areas of missing knowledge are almost black, closed coniferous forests are dark green, deciduous forests and vegetated arable land are bright green and areas with low plant cover are red in different shades. Some satellite images of the mosaic were received in September (e.g. the Gulf of Bothnia). These images are clearly distinguishable in the mosaic due to the seasonal difference; especially on arable land, which stand out in autumn photographs in different shades of red. Landsat 7 ETM + satellite images (approx. 1000) have been used to compile the material. The individual satellite images have been ortho-corrected into national map projections, after which the images have been tiled into a single satellite image mosaic.The pixel size is 22 m. In the data, water areas and areas of missing information show in black, closed coniferous forests in dark green, deciduous forests and vegetated arable lands in bright green, and Sparsely vegetated areas in different shades of red. Accreditation years 2000/± 1 y. Usage as a background map and for image interpretation. This SYKE’s dataset can be used according to open data license (CC BY 4.0). Inspire compatible dataset has been published. CLC2000 is based on LANDSAT 7 ETM satellite images taken between 1999 and 2002, which produced IMAGE2000 satellite imagery and land cover data. Individual satellite images were calibrated radiometrically, the atmospheric impact was corrected and a topography correction was carried out in Lapland. The cloudless areas of the individual images were assembled by vegetation zones. The image mosaic was combined to cover the whole of Finland. Tools developed by VTT have been used for calibrating and interpreting satellite images, which have been further developed during the project. The forest and biotope mapping of Metsähallitus and UPM has been used as the necessary terrain data for the interpretation. The JRC has produced a mosaic covering the whole of Europe, which differs from that of Finland.
