Dataset description

Soil 1:200 000 (land species) contains data produced from the whole of Finland between 2002 and 2009. The material can be used in regional planning, national defence, land surveying (EU) and various regional cooperation surveys. The mapping scale has been 1:50 000-1:200,000. Generalised 1:20 000, 1:50 000 and 1:100,000 soil maps have been used to compile medium-scale data, and 1:200,000 scale reproductions based on interpretation and terrain mapping. The minimum size of the soil type pattern is usually about 6 ha, with the exception of glacier river formations, edge morphic formations and kumpumorenes, which are described in the dataset for areas larger than 2 ha. The covering peat layer is described in new production as peat (0-0.3 m peat), thin peat (0.3-0.6 m peat) and thick peat (more than 0.6 m). Rowing, rocky rocks and open cliffs have been added to new production by generalising the corresponding patterns in the National Land Survey’s terrain database. In connection with the new production, terrain observations have been collected on the thickness of the ground cover and the order of layers at a depth of 1 m, as well as the exposing of rocks. The soil 1:200 000 (soil species) data were converted into coordinates in March 2013. The transformation from the unified coordinate system of the map coordinate system to the ETRS-TM35FIN coordinate system has been made using a triangular affinity.
