Dataset description

In 2012, the City of Helsinki construction service Stara introduced an electronic production control system that produces GPS location data for the work done. In February 2013, Stara launched an open data experiment to find new ways to monitor and visualise the work of winter care on the streets. In the early stages of the pilot, only a small part of Stara’s winter care work in Helsinki, about 10 per cent, was involved in the opened data. The data concerned the eastern city and East Helsinki, and there were about two dozen vehicles (21.2.2013). In April (12.4.2013), machines for cleaning street dust were added to the material. By February 2014, a total of 120 vehicles have already been included in the monitoring, and approximately 50-80 machines will be continuously displayed on the map depending on the circumstances. The service will gradually expand to cover all areas under Stara’s care. More information on winter road maintenance: https://www.hel.fi/helsinki/fi/kartat-ja-liikenne/kadut-ja-liikennesuunnittelu/katujen-kunnossapito/talvikunnossapito/ API description (interface description) can be found at https://github.com/codeforeurope/aura/wiki/API The vehicle position coordinates are in WGS-84 format. Data is five minutes delayed. The delay is due to the way mobile devices send data every three minutes in packages to the server. Location information comes every 1 second when the work is turned on. You can use the map template you want with the material. It is worth noting that the streets of Helsinki are classified into three treatment classes, which guides the urgency of work (see street care classes: in the U.S.. Stara manages approximately 60 % of Helsinki’s streets according to the building agency’s orders and care classifications.
