Dataset description

Salmon stocks in stream waters are data describing the prevalence of salmon stocks in stream waters. It has been drawn up on the basis of SYKE’s shore10 network and the new catchment areas (proposal) developed in the VALUE project and the environmental and natural resources of the ELY Centres produced by the National Land Survey of Finland. The data correspond to the situation on 11 August 2020. The data cover all rivers with a catchment area above at least 10 km², to which other rivers of importance for water management have also been added. The material has been produced in cooperation between SYKE and the ELY Centres. SYKE produced a data model to which the ELY Centres filled in data on the prevalence of salmon fish stocks. Two versions of the data have been made, with variable accuracy. More detailed data is intended for internal use by the environmental administration. Data with limited characteristics are included in SYKE’s open data (CC BY 4.0) and is available in SYKE’s Open Information service. Purpose of use: The data can be used in all planning of land use and other activities to improve the viability of salmon stocks and to strengthen stocks. For more information on the material and fishing restrictions: http://geoportal.ymparisto.fi/meta/julkinen/dokumentit/VirtavesienLohikalakannat.pdf On 11 August 2020, the corresponding routes of the network were distributed to the ELY Centres on the basis of the centre’s area of the main catchment area containing the riverbed/water system. Each ELY Centre created its own spatial dataset from these channels, in which data on the prevalence of salmon fish stocks were stored. The ELY Centres used the available data on fish stocks to identify salmon stocks. Once the necessary information had been filled in, the materials were merged into a national compilation. Two versions of this compilation were prepared, of which the characteristics are intended for the internal use of the environmental administration and the characteristics data are part of SYKE’s open spatial datasets.
