Dataset description

The Lake Register contains information about Finnish lakes. For all water assemblies of more than 1 ha, basic information is stored (the name of the lake and the symbol according to the catchment area, location information, water area and coastline length). In addition, data on the depth mapping situation and physiographic key figures are stored in the register as the depth mapping work progresses. Physiography data are based on graphical definitions (inaccuracy) for older depth surveys, but in the 1990s and beyond, a determination made with the help of spatial data sets and tools. The system is accessible through Hertta and SYKE’s Open Information services. The data received through the Open Information service is part of SYKE’s open datasets (CC BY 4.0). The original list of lakes, on which the register is based, was made at the end of the 1980s. The areas of the lakes, the length of the coastline and the locations of the lakes have been updated in 1999 based on the classification made by the Finnish Environment Institute for the numerical coastline data of the basic map. The area and coastline longitude data include values according to both 1:20000 baseline data and shore10 (1:10000 scale). Scan data since 1972. Purpose of use: Provides information for water monitoring, surveys, and rehabilitation. Is the basic material for water protection measures and plans. Acts as a tool for monitoring depth mapping work. The data in the register are based on studies based on numerical and graphic map data, mainly in the case of large lakes, partly also from literature sources. Processing history: The original list of lakes, on which the register is based, was made at the end of the 1980s. The areas of the lakes, the length of the coastline and the locations of the lakes have been updated in 1999 based on the classification made by the Finnish Environment Institute for the numerical coastline data of the basic map. Scan data since 1972.
