Vantaa families by family type since 31.12.1998. Families include married, cohabiting or registered couples living together and their unmarried children, one of the parents with unmarried children, and married or cohabiting couples without children or living in a registered partnership. The family consists only of persons living together; the lonely person is not part of the family. There can be no more than two successive generations in a family.If several generations live together, a family is formed from the youngest generation. Each person can only belong to one family. Family statistics also include cohabiting couples without children and cohabiting couples with only non-common children. Previously, the family statistics included only those who had children in common. Cohabiting couples are formed from unmarried adults of different sexes who live permanently in the same apartment if their age difference is less than 16 years and they are not siblings. Since 1.3.2003, the statistics also include registered partnerships, as the law entered into force on 1 March 2003 allowing same-sex couples to register their partnerships. Since 1.3.2017, the statistics also include same-sex married couples, as on 1 March 2017 an amendment to the Marriage Act entered into force, according to which same-sex couples have been able to marry.
