Dataset description

The material includes rivers and rivers protected under the Protection Act (No 35/87 (1987-01-23)) and water catchment areas within which the water bodies and parts of the water body are protected. Protected waters or parts of a water body cannot be authorised for the construction of a power plant within the meaning of the Water Act. The material also includes objects protected by separate laws on the protection of the Ounasjoki and Kyröjoki rivers by means of power plant construction. The Koskie Protection Act prohibits the construction of a new hydropower plant in 53 water bodies or parts of a water body. According to the Act, the construction of a new power plant may not be granted a permit within the meaning of the Water Act. Protected areas are demarcated so that they comprise coherent natural economic entities. The criteria used were the natural state, representativeness, endangeredness and rarity of watercourses, as well as scientific, fisheries, recreational and landscape significance. The material is part of SYKE’s open data (CC BY 4.0). The data product INSPIRE has been published. Purpose: Management of information on nature reserves. For more information: https://geoportal.ymparisto.fi/meta/julkinen/dokumentit/KoskiensuojeluAlueet.pdf Protected Rapids The dataset includes rapids, rivers and catchment areas including water bodies under protection in accordance to the Act on Protection of Rapids (No 35/87 (1987-01-23). Environmental permissions for building power plants can't be granted on the protected water bodies. The datasets includes also water bodies that are protected on the bases of separate Acts given for protection of Ounasjoki and Kyröjoki rivers against building power plants. This SYKE’s dataset can be used according to open data license (CC BY 4.0). Inspire compatible dataset has been published. The material was originally numericalised by the Ministry of the Environment 1993-1995 as table digitisation. The background was 1: 250 000 scale ground maps. The material has then been refined to the basic map scale at the Finnish Environment Institute as a screen digitisation. Protected water bodies and sub-basins have been extracted from the catchment areas material on the basis of the catchment code. The dataset was first Digitised by the Ministry of the Environment in 1993-1995. For this digitising the base map in scale 1:250 000 was used as a source material. After this the dataset has been defined to match the Finnish base maps in scale 1:20 000 in Finnish Environment Institute (SYKE). The outlines for the protected catchment areas are merged from the river basin dataset based on the river basin id.
