Urban areas 2010 based on INSEE 2008 data. — An urban area or ‘large urban area’ is a group of municipalities, of a single enclave and without enclave, consisting of an urban pole (urban unit) with more than 10000 jobs, and by rural municipalities or urban units (periurban crown) of which at least 40 % of the resident population in employment works in the pole or in municipalities attracted by it. — A ‘average area’ is a group of municipalities, of a single enclave and without an enclave, consisting of a cluster (urban unit) of between 5000 and 10000 jobs, and by rural municipalities or urban units of which at least 40 % of the resident population in employment works in the pole or in municipalities attracted by it. — A ‘small area’ is a group of municipalities, of a single enclave and without enclave, consisting of a pole (urban unit) from 1500 to 5000 jobs, and by rural municipalities or urban units of which at least 40 % of the resident population in employment works in the pole or in municipalities attracted by it.
