Dataset description

The “Prairies” product allows you to map the meadows of your territories. Grasslands are defined here as herbaceous areas with a vegetation cover of at least 30 %, of which at least 30 % are graminoid species (Poaceae, Cyperaceae and Juncaceae), which may include other non-woody plants (lichens, mosses and ferns) but also woody plants (sparse trees and shrubs) if their cover does not exceed 10 % of the total area. The 30 % threshold avoids confusion with bare soils. Thus, the prairie product concentrates on dense grasslands. Two spatial resolutions are available: original resolution of 20 m (10 m for 2018) and aggregate resolution of 100 m. For the display of WMS streams, the product at 100 m is displayed at low zoom levels and the product at 20 m at high zoom levels. The minimum mapped area unit is 1 ha. The “Prairies” product is a meadow/non-meadow binary layer provided by the European Earth Observation Programme Copernicus in raster format, and will be daily every 3 years from 2015. This sheet gives you access to WMS feeds and data download links on the Copernicus website. Two other grassland products are available: — Probability index of grassland vegetation (20 m) which maps the probability of the class on a scale of 1 to 100 and provides additional information to advanced users on the reliability of the mapping (values are lower, e.g. when the time series of input data were more limited); — Tillage indicator (20 m pixel) that maps the last tillage date (from 1 to 6 years).
