Dataset description

The implementation of public policies dedicated to the management of the marine environment in the overseas and metropolitan areas requires the mobilisation and analysis of numerous descriptive data on the environment and human activities. In order to be able to analyse these data together, it is useful to have a continuous and regular grid on the marine domain. For example, Cerema and the French Biodiversity Agency have developed a regular tile of 1 minute degree per 1 minute of degree, with the possibility of declining it on smaller scales. This layer covers the maritime space of the metropolis and the five overseas territories (Guadeloupe, Martinique, Guyana, Mayotte and Réunion) and their surroundings. The objective of this tile is to enable the structuring, aggregation and synthesis of data in clearly defined and known geographical units. Thus, it will be possible to homogeneously map environmental processes, biological and ecological compartments, human activities and social and economic parameters. Ultimately, the analysis of the meshed data can produce in a relatively rational and repeatable way the elements necessary for the localisation, description and understanding of the issues of the marine space. The flooring is in perfect geometric coherence with existing benchmarks such as MARSDEN tile, the statistical rectangles of the Fishing Information System and ICES, FAO fishing zones and VALPENA tile. The construction of this grid is also part of the approach initiated by the Gimel working group (geoinformation for the sea and the coast) to set up geographical reference information on the French marine and coastal area.
