Dataset description

The data standard covers geographical zoning defined under a protected designation of origin (PDO) or a protected geographical indication (PGI).The PDO, the protected designation of origin, corresponds to the European controlled designation of origin. It is the name of a region, a specific place or, in exceptional cases, a country, which is used to designate an agricultural product or foodstuff originating in that region, that particular place or that country of which:- the quality or characteristics of which are due essentially or exclusively to the geographical environment comprising natural and human factors and,- production, processing and preparation take place in the defined geographical area. The PGI, Protected Geographical Indication is defined by Article 2 of Regulation (EC) 510/2006. It is the name of a region, a specific place or, in exceptional cases, a country, which is used to designate an agricultural product or a foodstuff:• originating in that region, particular place or country• and whose quality, reputation or other characteristics may be attributed to that geographical origin• and whose production and/or processing and/or preparation take place in the defined geographical area. different geographical names, different terms and different products can be found, the product being the most precise ‘unit’ which can be defined within a PDO/PGI Specification. A product may be the subject of a particular delimitation. This standard distinguishes three zoning areas:• the geographical area of a PDO or PGI corresponding to the demarcated area in which all the stages (for PDOs) or certain stages (for PGIs) are carried out in the production of the PDO or PGI.• the demarcated parcel area of a PDO or PGI corresponding to a delimitation based on the administrative boundaries of the cadastre (the parcels) and whose sufficiently fine mesh size makes it possible to take account of very localised variations in the elements of the physical environment. This delimitation is used mainly for wine-growing PDOs and PGIs and in this case corresponds to the production area of the raw material.• the particular areas of a PDO or PGI corresponding to a production phase of the PDO or PGI (breeding, slaughter, etc.).
