Dans les Pays de la Loire, plusieurs gîtes à chauves-souris sont classés en arrêté de préfectoral de protection de biotope en raison des enjeux chauves-souris qu'ils accueillent. L’arrêté préfectoral de protection de biotope, plus connu sous le terme simplifié "d’arrêté de protection de biotope" (APB) est défini par une procédure relativement simple qui vise à la conservation de l’habitat (entendu au sens écologique) d’espèces protégées. Le préfet fixe dans son arrêté les mesures tendant à favoriser la préservation des ces sites.
