Dataset description

Agricultural potentials represent the capacity of a soil to accommodate crop production according to soil climatic conditions. These potentials can also be managed by taking into account other parameters (e.g. irrigation networks, socio-economic data, land...). The GDPA tool is based on the study of three soil cultural potentials: field crops, quantitative viticulture (PGI base) and market gardening. Synthesis of the three, the global cultural potential makes it possible to understand the cultural diversification capacity of a soil. Thus, the soils most conducive to diversification (strong global potential) allow the development of a large number of crops. The GDPA decision support tool was established in partnership with the Association Climatologique de l’Hérault (now integrated into the Department), the Hérault Department, the Hérault Chamber of Agriculture and INRAE in 2012/2013. It results from the analysis and processing of agropaedological data from the soil database, established and digitised in 2011. The tool is currently maintained by the Hérault Department. In particular, it has been updated following a work to complement the soil database carried out by the Métropole de Montpellier in 2018/2019. **Completeness limits**: The mapping ** does not cover all the municipalities of Herault, nor the total area of each municipality**. As a result, **uninvented soil means a lack of data, no conclusion as to the potentiality of this soil can be inferred from it.** **Map Precision Limits**: The mapping of cultural potentials is **scale 1/10 000th** (so-called “communal scale”). Thus, superposition with cadastral plans made on larger scales is not recommended by experts. Different **confidence indices** make it possible to translate the uncertainty of cartographic boundaries. **The data made available must therefore be used with caution according to the accuracy limits**. The Hérault department and its technical and scientific partners cannot be held responsible for inaccuracies in the databases and for inappropriate uses of the said databases.
