Community Regulation (EC) No 1593/2000 introduced an obligation in all Member States to locate and identify agricultural parcels.
To meet this requirement, France has set up the Graphic Parcellar Register (GPR) which is a geographical information system allowing the identification of agricultural parcels. Thus, each year, farmers send to the administration an area declaration file which includes, in particular, the drawing of the cultivation islands they exploit and the crops grown there.
The islets are located on the scale of 1:5000 on the photographic background of the comic Ortho (IGN) and their update is annual. This database is therefore a large-scale and regularly updated description of the majority of agricultural land.
The available data are the contours of the “anonymised” islets of the RPG and their cultural occupation represented by the majority group of crops of the islet. The winning content provided is the value of the code of the majority crop group in the island.
