The objective of the law establishing the PDIPR is to promote the discovery of natural sites and rural landscapes and then to develop non-motorised hiking modes by ensuring the continuity of routes and the conservation of rural paths. In addition to hiking, the PDIPR is also open to equestrian and mountain hikes.
The Department’s action on the paths of Santiago de Compostela is ancient. As part of the elaboration of the Departmental Plan for the Routes of Promenade and Hiking (P.D.I.P.R.), competence of the Departmental Council, the Department of Gers decided, in 1986, to register the paths of Saint-Jacques.
The Department is also responsible for the maintenance and marking of these paths. Prior to 2010, these missions were delegated to external contractors. From now on, the Departmental Council ensures the maintenance of the roads of Saint-Jacques and the GR of Pays Cœur de Gascony. The Department thus ensures the continuity, safety and quality of the paths.
