Natural areas of ecological, faunistic and floristic interest — ZNIEFF — type 2

The Natural Areas of ecological, faunistic and floristic interest are set up by the National Inventory of Natural Heritage on behalf of the Museum of Natural History. It is not a legal mechanism but rather a tool of scientific knowledge to protect the environment. Forests, ponds and forest plots may be affected by this scheme. Type 2 ZNIEFFs are the large, rich and unmodified natural ensembles, offering significant biological potentials. This type of ZNIEFF covers territories that actually represent large areas. These areas can also include one or more Type 1 areas and cover large ensembles such as mountain ranges, or landscapes. Some parts of the area may not have remarkable species or spaces but participate in a whole.
