Dataset description

Properties inscribed as World Heritage are covered by the application of; an international convention ratified by France, from 17 October to 21 November 1972. Inscription on the list of World Heritage properties entails for France the obligation through the regulatory tools at its disposal to protect the sites and a buffer zone around this site. The Convention defines the kind of natural or cultural sites that can be considered as inscription on the World Heritage List. This heritage is a cultural and natural heritage. The most original feature of the 1972 Convention is to bring together in a single document the concepts of nature protection and the preservation of cultural property. The Convention recognises the interaction between the human being and nature and the fundamental need to preserve the two. The World Heritage Convention sets out the duties of States Parties in the identification of potential sites, as well as their role in the protection and preservation of sites. By signing the Convention, each country commits not only to ensuring the good conservation of the World Heritage sites within its territory, but also to protecting its national heritage. States Parties are encouraged to integrate the protection of cultural and natural heritage into regional planning programmes, to establish staff and services at their sites, to undertake scientific and technical studies on conservation and to take measures to give this heritage a function in the daily lives of citizens. __Origin__ This JDD was created on the perimeter of the SALW region during the construction of heritage harmonisation.
